What is Sex Therapy?

One piece of burlap string forming two hearts on a wood grain background. Two hearts, bonded together, exploring connection in Minnesota sex therapy.

Sex therapy is a specialized way of doing psychotherapy. Sex therapists generally have masters or doctoral level training in counseling or therapy as well as more specialized training in sexuality. Sex therapists often use specific treatment models along with behavioral exercises to try at home. Sex therapy never involves nudity.

When the sex in your relationship is going well, it tends to be a pretty small part of your relationship. When the sex is not going well, or you’re not having it, it becomes a much bigger part.
Those seeking sex therapy often have co-occuring anxiety, depression, or trauma. We treat these issues along with your sexual concerns so that you not only achieve better intimacy with your partner, but the subsequent symptoms decrease or go away completely
You've avoided coming to counseling earlier, because you just aren't used to talking about these things. However, the issue just isn't going away. Maybe you're tired of the same old arguments. Or you just feel...unfulfilled. You want a safe space to talk about the most vulnerable parts of your life. You're ready for things to get better even if it means talking about things you normally don’t talk to anyone about.

When you're looking for couples counseling or sex therapy, it's important that you see a therapist who is comfortable talking about the uncomfortable and who you feel confident can truly help. These aren't conversations you're used to having on a daily basis, much less with someone you don't know very well. But they are conversations we have everyday. As sex therapists, these conversations are normal for us. We want to normalize them for you too.

You deserve to find wholeness and satisfaction in your life again. Sex therapy and couples or marriage counseling with experienced therapists can help you do exactly that. We know what conversations need to happen and what you can try that will truly help you get unstuck and begin moving forward in all areas of your life.

At Sexual Wellness Institute, we provide individual, couples, & group therapy for the Minneapolis area.
Our therapists provide many kinds of therapy, with extensive training and experience working with couples and sexual concerns.
We know you may have questions! Visit our FAQ page to learn more.
For added convenience, we are now able to provide secure, video counseling through a private online platform! We know it's scary to consider talking to your doctor about such intimate concerns. You may fear you'll get news you don't want or are not ready for. You may forget to ask questions during that short meeting. In e-therapy, we can help you get clarity on what you want, and how to get there in a way that inflicts the least amount of pain.
